LISTEN TO A TRACK BY AMANDA ROGERS...
"Music is like breathing
to me. I think if it was taken away from me, my heart
would stop beating. It’s universal. It’s how I communicate
my thoughts and emotions; its therapy." - Amanda Rogers
It takes something wonderful, if not miraculous, to transform a room of conversation and doubt into a hush of attentive silence. It happened years ago at a showin Syracuse, NY. Droves of young concert-goers had waited in line to see New Found Glory, Saves The Day, and Piebald. Opening this show was a young and breath-takingly beautiful girl with a piano. The girl and piano weren't exactly identical fare to the guitar riff, great hair, pop/punk bands that would take the stage afterwards. By the end of her first song, however, a pin drop could be heard, until deafening applause and overwhelming surprise flooded the showplace.
Among her fans are Dashboard Confessional's Chris Carrabba and Onelinedrawing singer/songwriter Jonah Matranga. Amanda and Jonah have performed together on several occasions on both the East and West Coasts, collaborating on crowd-thrilling renditions of The Beatles "In My Life" as well as songs by The Sugarcubes, and Bob Dylan.
After playing clubs and indie venues, and moving on to large scale college festivals, Amanda Rogers went out to California to record her newest offering with Grant Capes (30 seconds to Mars, Spark Lights The Friction, Explosions in The Sky, Long Since Forgotten) in Hollywood.
In Amanda's own words,
"Yes, I am a girl on piano, but I assure you… it's not what you think. I am a 22 year old songwriter from Syracuse, NY where I grew up going to indierock and hardcore shows. So, naturally, that is where I found myself most comfortable playing. I started playing shows when I was 15 years old. It's still the same as it was then I drag my keyboard on stage as some punk band packs their gear, then I sit down and look up at all the kids who are either confused or half disappointed that they can't show off their new mosh moves. Then I begin to play and everyone sits down and closely listens to my brutally honest lyrics and stark, stripped down piano melodies. I keep singing my sad stories and meandering thoughts and everyone keeps listening. My shows are always intimate no matter how big the venue, how large the crowd, or how loud the other bands.
I try to keep my recording just as intimate. Some call it " raw" or "lo-fi", but I call it bedroom ambience. I have 2 records that I put out independently. Here and Nowhere, a 12 song full-length released in 1999, and The Grant Sessions E.P., a 7 song E.P. released in 2002. In 2003 Immigrant Sun Records released my 3rd cd called The Places You Dwell, which is a 10 song full length in its second pressing.
I play many shows between the tours where I have had the privilege of playing with many bands such as Moneen, Dashboard Confessional, Thursday, Coheed and Cambria, Sensefield, Brandtson, Murder By Death, The Used, Lacuna Coil, K (from ida), The Movielife, Mates of State, Taking back Sunday, Sunday's Best, Jupiter Sunrise, Piebald, Moe, Fairweather, The Start, Fallout Boy, and Thrice, just to name a few.
I am also planning to build a remote control that will put my life on hold so that there is no threat of it interrupting my music plans."
Most recently, Amanda has been touring with her rock band, Jupiter Sunrise, and released a solo EP, Something Borrowed, Something Blue in Fall 2005. Regardless of if you encountered her live in concert, or caught one of her songs in your CD player, Amanda Rogers may just restore your faith in singer/songwriters.
